Fender... err... Hood Bender

Today was pretty uneventful, but there was still an accident. It didnt really slow down my commute much. Speeds went from about 80mph to 40mph because of the accident. This time it was on my side of the highway somewhere by Hamden involving a Kia Sephia and a mid 90s Nissan Pathfinder. The Kia rear ended the Pathfinder and the hood of the Kia was pretty badly bent. I tried doing the video capture but at 40mph you really cant get anything good. My theory on these accidents is that if you're following an SUV (or a truck for that matter) and you're in a car you are not going to be able to see the cars in front it. So you basically end up basing all your reactions to that one SUV or truck directly in front of you. When you are behind another car you can see the cars in front of you and if they start to slow down you can see that and start reacting before you see the tail lights of the car in front of you.

So this is the phone that I use to take the pictures. It has a 1.3MP camera and video recording capabilites as well. It has a 32MB Memory Stick Duo memory card and another 32MB of internal memory. I can take quite a bit of pics with this much space. They pretty much just squeezed a Sony digicam into a phone. I love this thing!! My Camera Phone

My Daily Route to Work

This is a map of my daily commute, its about 40 miles each way. This is so you can get an idea of where these accidents are happening. As you can see 95% of my commute is on RT 15, a 2 lane highway with trees in the median (dont worry, pretty much the whole highway is lined with guard rails). The problem is its not very wide, and there's barely a breakdown lane. The speed limit is still 55mph, but if you go slower than 70mph you'll get run over. The fast lane typically moves at 80mph during the rush hours. My route in to work

Carnage Continues 4/12/05

Somewhere by Wallingford/North Haven on Rt. 15 a car was flipped over on its side. Once again the accident wasn’t on my side of the highway, but it caused a back up of about 1.5 miles. I tried to take a pic but I took it a second too late and the flatbed truck was in the way. I think I’m going to start taking videos instead. But its not over yet. There was another accident down by New Haven about half a mile before the tunnel, again on the other side of the highway. Two cars were involved. One looked like a late 80s Corolla and the other looked like an early 90s Benz. The accident didn’t look too bad, the cars were about 100 feet apart with debris littered between the two and the Benz was facing the wrong way. Amazingly enough this accident caused no back up on my side so I wasn’t ready for it and I couldn’t take a pic.

This is not the greatest pic as it was actually on the other side of the highway and I'm using a cell phone to take these pics. This time I saw a black cloud of smoke from a half mile away. By the time I got to it the fire was out, but it looks like the Cherokee was on fire. Dont know what the other cars are that were involved. Made for some really horrible traffic going in to work. Hope no one was seriously injured. Firey Three Car Pile Up

Well I didnt know what to do with my blog so I decided to start posting other people's misfortunes. I have about an hour commute to work and there seems to be quite a bit of accidents on my in, so I'll be posting pics of what I see. Dont know how often these will happen, but here is one from April 8th. A Subaru Impreza rear ends a Jeep Cherokee. Impreza meets Cherokee
